Pentaco Construction Ltd were awarded the contract for the extensive refurbishment of the existing Cambridge Youth Hostel following a traditional competitive tender process. The project was agreed on a JCT Intermediate Form of Contract with Contractor’s Design. The design elements for the work included mechanical & electrical installations.
The youth hostel is situated on a busy city junction and parking, deliveries and general site access were restricted to say the least. Careful planning of all site operations and deliveries was obviously essential. The works also involved the replacement of windows with aluminium framed, double glazed units, extensive internal strip out and remodelling of walls, as well as redecoration throughout. Catering for 123 beds the hostel boasts a brand new café and reception area with bespoke joinery counters and desks installed. The café area has been designed and built with the intention of enticing not only staying guests but the general public to use the facility. All bathroom areas have been refurbished too with hygienic wall cladding and feature colour walls to shower areas. All colour schemes used are reflective of the YHA’s corporate branding.
Externally some of the walls have been upgraded using a Webber through colour system and the courtyard has been overhauled with paving slabs and a new bicycle storage area installed.
